Bakra’s Fluid Pupil’s EP is an innocent and open-minded exploration into the genre of house music. We get to join the artist turning knobs and pushing buttons - an attitude of “Fuck it, let’s just try this” - testing and probing to create a light-hearted, sometimes playfully meandering, sometimes machinistically driving ride into a valley of beats.
Describing musical journeys in the image of a 70's sports car following the blotched centre strip snail of rainy highways towards a metropolitan fever dream of Vaporwave urbanity, might be slightly overused. But let’s imagine a certain type of repetitive movement passing behind tinted windows when listening to the cool, sleek opening beats of “Fluid Pupils”. A four bar loop tingly melody lifts our mood and we allow ourselves to be content and relaxed.
The artist himself found inspiration in the depths of dilated pupils of his friends on one of these long trippy evenings stuck at home. We can see this visual represented in the EP’s artwork: An energy of happy curiosity - always bordering on the edge of experiencing something more intense. The possibility to be dragged with almost mechanistic determination into the jumpy baseline of the second track “Streamlined”. Experiencing the sudden urge to dance along to not get overrun by the banging drop and dreaming of hearing this on a big sound system, in a crowded club, in better times.
Finally, the EP comes to closure with “Chemical Dance”, a made-for-mixing track that lures the listener into a floaty trance of letting go of the intensity, the yearning for big industrial surroundings, and accepting the release back into the life we are living for the time being. We hope you enjoyed the ride.
